What Makes The Best Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups?

Whenever you mix chocolate and peanut butter, you can’t go wrong. However, when you see the finished product of this recipe you’re expecting a familiar taste. That’s the taste of a Reese’s cup. You’re expecting that soft, peanut buttery texture that melts in your mouth. Does that sound right?

This recipe is a tad different. It offers the same taste of the beloved Reese’s cup, but it has the texture of a dipped cone from Dairy Queen. I KNOW you know what I’m talking about. It produces a peanut buttery crunch that leaves you craving the next bite.

We’ve mastered this recipe when the peanut butter cups are:

  • Soft and filled with peanut butter on the inside
  • Hardened with chocolate on the outside
  • layered with a pinch of salt (optional)

If we nail these three criteria, this recipe is a major success.

The Story Of These Homemade Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

Growing up, my favorite candy was always Reese’s cups. I’d actively search for Reese’s cups in halloween bowls and never passed up an opportunity to pick one up at the grocery store check-out line.

Because I enjoyed Reese’s cups so much, this was one of the first recipes I learned as a teenager. I mean c’mon, unlimited Reese’s cups?! I think yes.

Making my own Reese’s cups allows me to tweak the recipe to accommodate my taste buds. For example, I love salt as a flavor. More specifically, I love a sweet and salty treat and real Reese’s cups aren’t very salty. In this recipe, I can add salt as an added flavor and make these homemade Reese’s cups just as I like them.

With all this talk about Reese’s and salt, let’s take a look at the ingredients needed to make these healthy homemade chocolate peanut butter cups.

Ingredients Needed For Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

There are few ingredients needed to make your favorite chocolate candy. If you enjoy a salty taste (like I do), I recommend sprinkling salt to taste. Let’s take a look at the other ingredients needed to make homemade Reese’s cups.

  • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter I prefer salted and chunky
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons coconut OR almond flour
  • 1 cup dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1-2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • Flaky sea salt to taste and top

How To Make Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

  1. Line 9 muffin tins with paper liners.
  2. Melt chocolate and coconut oil in microwave in 30 second intervals to avoid burning the chocolate.
  3. Once melted use pastry brush (or spoon) to brush 1/3 way up the liners. Ensure the bottom of paper liner is covered with chocolate.
  4. Place in freezer until chocolate is hardened (about 10 minutes). While chocolate is hardening, make filling (see next step).
  5. Add peanut butter, maple syrup, and flour and mix well. Mixture should be firm and held together.
  6. Retrieve tin from freezer and spoon peanut butter filling over the chocolate. Gently press the filling down and smooth so it flattens against the bottom of the cupcake liner.
  7. Spoon the remaining chocolate over the peanut butter layer (may need to reheat chocolate). Top with salt to taste.
  8. Place cups back in freezer until firm (at least 1 hour).
  9. Store in fridge or freezer and enjoy!

How To Store Your Leftovers

There’s good news if you don’t eat all nine homemade Reese’s cups in one sitting. You can store your leftovers! I store my leftover peanut butter cups uncovered in the freezer.

You can store them in the fridge, but I recommend using the freezer. If you like them softer, more like real Reese’s cups, then use the fridge. I like the chocolate frozen, like a Dairy Queen dipped cone, which is why I use the freezer.

These homemade peanut butter cups are enjoyable for days after you make them. Mine never last more than a day or two because they’re THAT GOOD.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these peanut butter cups gluten-free?

Yes! When using the ingredients listed above, these peanut butter cups are 100% gluten-free.

Do I need to use paper liners?

We recommend placing paper liners in the muffin tin for two reasons.
1 – it allows you to embed the peanut butter inside the cup
2 – it’s easy to take out of the muffin tin after freezing

Do I need to top the peanut butter cups with salt?

If you don’t like salt as a flavor, you do not need to top with salt. I love a sweet and salty taste, so I choose to add a pinch of salt. It’s totally optional.

Should I store these homemade Reese’s cups in the freezer?

Yes, we recommend storing your leftovers in the freezer to keep the consistent texture.
